Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a flight risk
The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His child, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The police took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
