The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
