The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
